Scranton, PA - Tuesday afternoon, the Lackawanna College men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss to Penn State-Hazleton by a 5-4 score. The Falcons came close to tying the contest with 1:03 left in the game, when a Ryan Euell kick ricocheted off the crossbar and into the hands of the Penn State goalie.
At the start of the game, Penn State-Hazleton scored early and often taking a 3-0 lead with 19:58 left in the first half. However, the Falcons showed a lot of fortitude by rebounding with 2 goals of their own. The first came off the foot of Daniel Zuniga with 8:45 left in the half, with an assist by Carlos Perez. The second came with 2:25 left in the half when Carlos Perez muscled a shot pass the PSU goalie, with an assist by Euell.
In the 2nd half, Lackawanna tied the score 8 minutes into the half, when Zuniga scored again, this time with an assist from Joshua Schliesing. Again Penn State – Hazleton took the lead when they scored twice, the second coming on a penalty kick with 13:46 left in the game. However, Falcons would not give up and pressured Penn State for another goal by Euell with 6:44 left and another assist by Schliesing. Although the Lackawanna booters continued to press, the closes they came to tying the game was Euell's kick off the crossbar.
Lackawanna will take the field again on Saturday when they host County College of Morris at Scranton Prep's Loyola Complex. Saturday's game is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start and will be the Falcons last home game of the 2016 season.
