Scranton, PA – Playing against their closest competition, County College of Morris, on Saturday afternoon, the Lackawanna College Basketball needed a win to guarantee them a first-place seed in the upcoming Region XIX Division Men's Basketball Tournament. That win did not come easy, even though Lackawanna took the initial lead in the game and never relinquished it until Morris tied the score with 7 seconds left in the contest. CCM's Ranell Bell's jump shot from above the key knotted the score at 73 all. The Falcons quickly replied by getting the ball to Jonathan Williams just inside the foul line. A quick jumper by Williams and the ball falling through the net as the buzzer sounded regained the Lackawanna lead and a 75-73 victory.
Although the Falcons have three more games remaining in the 2017/18 campaign, Lackawanna put themselves in the position where they guaranteed themselves the first-place seed in the Region Tourney by claiming the tie breaker against the two conference rivals, who still have a mathematical chance to tie the Falcons for that position. Although their closest rivals Morris and Raritan Valley Community College can tie the Falcons if they win the remainder of their games and Lackawanna losses all three of their contests, the Falcons own the tie breaker against each of those two teams winning the respective home and away series.
Lackawanna's top performers on Saturday were Jonathan Williams with a team high 20 points and 4 blocks; Ransford Agyeman with 16 points and 9 rebounds; Khristian Gill with a double-double of 14 points and a team leading 12 rebounds, even though he did not start; and Keyon Faulkner-Smith with 10 points. Javontay Pipkin led the team in assists with 12.
With the first-place seed clinched, the Falcons can look forward to playing all its tournament games on its home court, since Lackawanna College will host the Region Tournament at the Student Union on March 9 and 10.
