Falcons Baseball Sweeps Sussex County CC in Saturday Afternoon Double-Header

(Newton, NJ) – The Lackawanna Falcons traveled to New Jersey on Saturday afternoon for a double-header against Sussex County CC. The Falcons won both games by a score of 7-3. Lackawanna increased their record to 12-11.

The Falcons started off the top of the 1st inning with a RBI single from Thylar Summarell. The Falcons gave up a run to Sussex in the bottom of the 1st but answered back with 2 runs in the top of the 2nd. DJ Barry-Staszak and Zac Granger both hit RBI singles. Lackawanna gave up 2 more runs in the bottom of the 2nd on a throwing error and RBI double. The game would stay scoreless until the 6th as David Williams cracked a deep solo homer to center to break the 3-3 tie. Thylar Summarell hit a 2-run homerun to right field in the 7th inning to help Lackawanna win, 7-3. The winning pitcher was Dominic Verrastro. He pitched 4 innings, gave up no hits and no earned runs.

Lackawanna put the first runs on the board in the top of the 2nd. Owen Kiess hit a sacrifice fly to center and John Crane grounded out to 3rd but the run managed to score. Lackawanna went on to score 2 more runs in the top of the 4th. Jerry Reinhart stole home and Ryan Cole hit an RBI single up the middle of the diamond. DJ Barry-Staszak added to Lackawanna's 4-0 lead in the 5th, hitting an RBI single to the second baseman. An RBI double by Ryan Cole and an RBI single by Zac Granger gave Lackawanna a 7-0 lead in the top of the 6th. Sussex battled back with a 3-run homer later in the inning but the Falcons held on for a 7-3 victory. The winning pitcher was Nate Kitchell. He pitched 5 innings, gave up 2 hits and no earned runs. He also struck out 9 batters.
