Georgetown, DE – Saturday afternoon, the Lackawanna College Baseball team swept its Region XIX Division II doubleheader against Delaware Technical Community College. With the double win, the Falcons clinched a berth in the 2018 Region XIX Division II Baseball Tournament. Their remaining games against Mercer County Community College (April 21) and Rowan College at Burlington County (April 28) will determine their seed in that tourney. In today's sweep Lackawanna beat Del Tech 6-4 in extra innings in game one and by a 12-6 score in the nightcap.
In game one, the Falcons scored two in the top of the sixth to tie the score at 4-4 on a two-run single by Sir Walter Melendez; and then broke that tie with two run double by DJ Berry-Staszak in the eighth to claim the 6-4 extra inning victory. Key to the win was the three-inning relief performance of Kelani Luke who held Del Tech both scoreless and hitless over the final three innings of the contest.
Lackawanna hitters tallied eight hits in the win, with Sir Walter Melendez contributing a multi-hit effort. Melendez was three for four with three singles, a run scored and two runs driven in. Of the players with a single hit, Aaron Yurko, Kelani Luke and DJ Berry-Staszak were the only players with extra base hit, all of which were important to the Falcons' win. Luke slammed a solo homer in the fourth to tie the score at 2-2; Yurko doubled and scored one of the two go ahead runs in the eighth; and, Berry-Staszak had his go ahead double in the eighth.
Luke earned the win in relief.
In the second game, Del Tech took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Falcons immediately responded with a seven-run inning in the second to give them a lead that they would never relinquish on the way to their 12-6 win. In that inning, Lackawanna slammed three homers, a two-run shot by both Ryan Cole and Sir Walter Melendez and a solo homer by Luis Rodriguez.
In the nightcap, Lackawanna collected eleven hits with Jamoi Percival, DJ Berry-Staszak, Kelani Luke and Luis Rodriguez having multi-hit games.
