Lackawanna splits with Monroe Community College

Scranton, PA - Sunday afternoon, the Lackawanna College baseball team split their home doubleheader with Monroe Community College. The Falcons dropped the first game in 11 innings by a 13-9 score, before beating the Tribunes in the nightcap, 11-5.

In the opener, Jean Carlos Bonilla suffered the loss after giving up four earned runs in the eleventh inning.

Despite the loss, the Lackawanna hitters recorded 14 hits with four Falcons contributing 10 of those hits. Michael Villa and the D'Quan Matthews led the group with three hits in five at bats. Villa had three singles and a run scored; while Matthews single twice and doubled, with three runs scored and an RBI. The other two Falcons, who recorded multi-hit games, were Zach Lopatka and Giovanni Torres. Lopatka double and homered in six visits to the plate, while scoring and driving in a run. Torres singled and doubled in six plate appearances with a run scored and three RBIs.

In the nightcap, Lackawanna scored seven runs over the first two innings, giving Jared Solomon all the support he needed to record his third victory of the season. Solomon pitched six innings, relinquishing four runs on four hits, while striking out eight.

At the plate, the first three hitters in the Lackawanna lineup had multi-hit games. Connor Perry, the leadoff hitter, singled and homered in three at-bats. He scored three times and drove in a run. Hitting second, Giovanni Torres singled twice in his three visits to the plate and scored three runs while driving in another. The number three hitter, Zach Loptaka, singled and homered in three plate appearances. Lopatka scored two runs and drove in three more. Max Guadalupe and Michael Villa contributed to the Falcons' winning efforts with extra base hits; each had a double.

Lackawanna returns to conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Skylander Stadium in Augusta, New Jersey to take on Sussex County Community College. This Region XIX Division II twin-bill was originally scheduled for this past Saturday but had to be moved to Tuesday because of wet field conditions. Start time for the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader is 2: 00 PM.
