Falcons sweep Conference Doubleheader

Wayne, PA – Wednesday afternoon, the Lackawanna College baseball team swept its Region XIX Division II doubleheader against Valley Forge Military College, to balance their conference win/loss record at 2-2. The Falcons took the opener by outscoring VFMC 8-4 and then shut out the Trojans in the nightcap, 4-0.

In the opener, Lackawanna scored five runs in the top of first to give starter, Zach Lopatka, a lead that he would not relinquish. Lopatka was credited with his second win of the season, after holding Valley Forge to two runs over six innings, one of which was unearned. He gave up three hits and struck out eight. The other two runs scored by VFMC came off reliever, Jean Carlos Bonilla, in the seventh inning. Lopatka's win/loss record is now 2-0.

At the plate, the Falcon hitters contributed ten hits in the victory with four of them having multi-hit days. Connor Perry and Mike Villa each had a single and double. Perry had his in four at bats with a run scored and a RBI, while Villa recorded his in three visits to the plate, with two runs driven in. Giovanni Torres and Jahmoi Percival were the other two multi-hit batters. Each had two singles in four plate appearances. D'Quan Matthews was the only other Lackawanna hitter with an extra base hit, a double in the top of the seventh.

Alex Varaksa was the top performer in the nightcap, as he held the Trojans scoreless over seven innings on eight hits. Varaksa struck out eight. The win was his third of the season, giving him a win/loss  record of 3-1.  Lackawanna scored in the first inning on a Connor Perry walk and a subsequent RBI double by Luis Rodriguez. That was the only run in the contest until the Falcons added three insurance runs in the seventh.

Both Zach Lopatka and Giovanni Torres had two-hit games in the nightcap. Torres singled twice in four at bats with an RBI, while Lopatka singled and doubled with two RBIs in four plate appearances. Besides Rodriguez and Lopatka, the other Falcons hitter with an extra base hit was Mike Villa,a two bagger in the fifth.

Lackawanna takes the diamond again on Saturday with their third consecutive Region XIX DII doubleheader. Saturday's twin-bill is against Sussex County Community College and will be played at Skylander Stadium in Augusta, New Jersey. The first game is scheduled to start at 12:00 PM.
