Lackawanna finishes weekend play with a split

Rochester, NY – Sunday afternoon, the Lackawanna College baseball team completed a busy weekend with a doubleheader split with Monroe Community College. The Falcons dropped the opener by a 5-3 score and took the nightcap by outscoring the tribunes, 2-1. With the split, Lackawanna ended three consecutive days of play with a record of four wins and two losses.

In game one, the Falcons took the initial lead with two runs in the fourth inning and another score in the fifth. Unfortunately, it would not be enough as Monroe rebounded with four in the fifth inning and another in the sixth to claim the victory.

Alex Varaksa suffered the loss, after throwing four and two thirds innings and giving up four runs on eight hits. It was his first loss of the season. He now has a 2-1 pitching record.

Lackawanna had four hits in the game, with three going for extra bases. Connor Perry and Luis Rodriguez each had a double, while Lopatka contributed a triple.  Dustin Wilcox had the single.

Game two was a pitcher's battle as each team was limited to five hits, all singles. Fortunately for the Falcons, first baseman, Kyle Rogers's base hit drove in two runs in the third inning. Those two runs were all that Lackawanna starter, Eli Baez, needed as he held the Tribunes to one run over six innings of work. Baez gave up Monroe's five hits and struck out three. Jamoi Percival entered the game in relief of Baez in the seventh inning and earned a save after holding MCC hitless and scoreless. The win was Baez's second of the year without a loss and Percival's second save.

Besides Rogers's two RBI single, Connor Perry and D'Quan Matthews contributed a base hit, while Zach Lopatka had two.

Lackawanna is scheduled to return to the diamond on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Corning Community College in Corning, New York. Game one is slated for a 2:00 PM start. The Falcons now have an overall win/loss record of 16-6.
