Falcon Baseball Season Preview

Scranton, PA: The Lackawanna College Baseball team is coming off a season where they had a 26-18 record and a 3rd place finish in Region 19. Currently 8 sophomores on the roster have already signed scholarships to play at NCAA Division I and II schools.

The Falcons return 5 starting position players that includes two All-Region selections from a year ago. D'Quan Matthews, who has accepted a scholarship with NCAA Division I Grambling State University, was voted to the 1st team All-Region team in 2016 and Connor Perry, who has accepted a scholarship with NCAA Division I University of Pittsburgh, was voted to the All Region 2nd team.  Matthews hit .302 with 4 home runs, 30 RBIs and team leading 28 stolen bases in 2016.  Perry led the team with a .364 batting average, 34 RBIs and 16 doubles.  On the mound the Falcons return RHP Max Frederick who had team leading ERA of 3.13 and struck out 60 batters. Also returning is RHP Alex Varaksa, who has accepted a scholarship NCAA Division I Norfolk State University, went 3-3 with 2 saves in 2016 and LHP Zach Lopatka, who has signed with NCAA Division I Youngstown State University who was 4-4 and had a 3.8 ERA.

Lackawanna welcomes the addition of several newcomers who will make an immediate impact. Sophomore RHP Jared Solomon who has accepted a scholarship with NCAA Division I Xavier University and sophomore RHP Logan Zavada who has accepted scholarship at NCAA Division II East Stroudsburg University will be key contributors on the mound. Freshmen pitcher J.C. Bonilla who was the Bronx, NY player of the year his senior year of high school will contribute valuable innings for the Falcons. Sophomore 1st basemen Kyle Rogers is expected to help the Falcons offense along with freshmen infielders Vincent Napoltiano and freshmen catcher Sean Putnam.

Coach Thompson had this to say about the upcoming season "We are very excited for the 2017 season, we have a good mix of sophomores who gained valuable experience last year and incoming freshmen who are hungry to compete right away.  Our pitching staff is much deeper than last year and we expect that to be a strength as we enter the 2017 season."

Lackawanna opens their 2017 campaign this weekend in North Carolina with games against Rockingham Community College on Saturday February 18th and against Surry Community College on Sunday February 19th.
