The Lackawanna College Athletic Department and its Baseball Program are honored to announce that three members of its 2016 baseball team, Alex Varaksa, Michael Villa and Jake Miller, were selected to participate in the 2016 New York Collegiate Summer League (NYCBL) All-Star game, played Thursday night at Onondaga Community College.
Both Varaksa and Villa are members of the Sherrill Silversmiths and played for the league's Eastern team in the midsummer contest; while Miller, a member of the Hornell Dodgers, was a member of the Western team.
Varaksa made the Eastern team as a pitcher after appearing in 12 games for the Silversmiths as both a relief and starting pitcher. In that role, he recorded 2 wins without a loss and was also credited with a save. During those 12 appearances, Varaksa established a 3.05 ERA while striking out 33.
Villa, who redshirted during Lackawanna's 2016 season, was named to the Eastern team after hitting .356 in 26 games, recording 36 hits in 101 at-bats, 3 of which were doubles. During those 26 contests, he scored 26 times, drove in 8 runs and was credited with 7 stolen bases.
Miller gained his position on the Western team as a relief pitcher. At Hornell, he took the mound in 15 games, pitching 22 innings, while striking out 15. In those 15 appearances he was credited with three saves and two wins.
In the game, Varaksa threw 2/3 of an inning relinquishing 2 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 1. In three plate appearances, Villa walked once, scored a run and was credited with an RBI, Miller closed out the game for the Western team, holding the Eastern team scoreless on one hit in 2/3 of an inning of relief. Varaksa and Villa Will be returning to Lackawanna for the 2017 season; while Miller will be transferring to Shenandoah College after using his two years of NJCAA eligibility during the 2016 season.
