Falcons falls in Tournament Opener

Georgetown, DE – Friday morning, the Lackawanna College baseball team was defeated in their opening game of the Region XIX Division II Baseball Tournament. The Falcons lost to County College of Morris by a 7-6 score. With the loss, Lackawanna fell into the elimination bracket where they will play Valley Forge Military College tomorrow at 9:00 AM. That contest will be played at the Delaware Technical Community College baseball field.

In today's game, Lackawanna took an early lead in the top of the first inning, when Ethan Bowen reached base after being hit by a pitch; then moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a subsequent Morris error.

The Falcons lead did not last long, as the Titans scored two in the bottom of the first and two more in in the bottom of the third. Lackawanna cut into the Morris lead in the top of the fourth, when Sean O'Connor reached base on a hit by pitch; stole second and scored on a Carlos Gomez single.

The score remained at 4-2 until the seventh. In the top of that inning the Falcons rallied for four runs on an RBI single by Zach Lopatka and another by Bowen; and a two run single off the bat of Connor Perry.

Unfortunately, Lackawanna could not hold on to the 6-4 lead; as Morris bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh and another in the eighth.

Losing pitcher for the Falcons was Alex Varaksa. Pitching in relief Varaksa threw the last inning and a third, relinquishing one run on three hits. He walked one and struck out two. The starting pitcher, Max Frederick, went six and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking out six.

Lackawanna's top hitter was Lopatka, who singled and doubled, scored and drove in a run, in five at bats. Also having notable days at the plate were D'Quan Matthews, who doubled and scored; Bowen, who singled, scored twice and drove in a run; and, Perry with is his two run single.
