For the third consecutive week, a Lackawanna College athlete has been named the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Athlete of the Week. This week the EPAC office named Alex Varaksa as its top athlete.
Varaksa earned the honor for his pitching performance during the week starting on April 25th. In the course of that week, Varaksa appeared in two games and recorded a win and a save. On Wednesday, April 27th, he entered the game against Sussex County Community College with the scored tied 3-2 in the seventh inning and gained a save by shutting the Skylanders out on one hit, while striking out two. Two days later, as a starter, he shut out Raritan Valley Community College on one hit over seven innings while striking out 13. The lone hit came in the top of the seventh inning when Raritan's Eric Drzewiecki led off the inning with a grounder between the Falcons' first baseman Wady Tactuk and second baseman Isaac Samuel. Samuel made an all-out effort to make a play but was only able to knock the grounder down, allowing it to settle just outside of the diamond.
For the week Varaska pitching totals were 8 innings pitched, 2 hits relinquished, no runs given up, 2 walks and 15 strikeouts. He also had a pinch hit single against Central Penn College.
