Scranton, PA – Saturday afternoon, the Lackawanna College baseball team fell twice to Mercer County Community College by scores of 11-2 and 8-7.
In the opener, Alex Varaksa took the loss, giving him a 2-2 win/loss record this season. At the plate, the Falcons were held to five hits; singles by Wady Tactuk, Connor Perry and Isaac Samuel; and, a single and double by Sterling Smith.
In the night cap, Lackawanna scored three times in the bottom of the seventh, but came up short, as they failed to erase an 8-4 deficit.
Losing pitcher for the Falcons was Charlie Hessil, who gave up Mercer's two go ahead runs in the top of fifth. Lackawanna's top hitters were D'Quan Matthews and Isaac Samuel, who together drove in all of Lackawanna's seven runs. Matthews singled home Samuel in the second and then drove him in again with a two run homer in the seventh. Samuel tripled with the bases loaded in the fourth and tripled in another run in the seventh. Matthews did his damage in four at bats; while Samuel had his extra base hits in three trips to the plate.
Lackawanna plays at home again tomorrow, when it hosts Queensborough Community College in a non-conference twin-bill. Game time for game one is 1:00 PM
