Scranton, PA – The Falcons consecutive game winning streak reached None on Tuesday afternoon, as the Lackawanna College baseball team beat Sullivan County Community College by a 13-3 score. The final score is not indicative as to how close this game was through six innings. Lackawanna trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the sixth. In that half inning, the Falcons scored three and then four more in the seventh and five in the eighth.
The win was credited to Alex Varaksa. Varaksa pitched six innings giving up two runs on three hits while striking out eleven. Joshua Breittholz pitched the final two innings in relief, giving up an unearned run on two hits. The win is Varaksa's second of the season.
Lackawanna's top batters were Shane Rivenburgh, who singled, doubled and homered in five at bats and Sterling Smith, who singled and tripled in his three at bats while driving in four runs. Also having multi-hit games were Connor Perry, with two double in three plate appearances, D'Quan Matthews and Dustin Wilcox, each with two singles in five at bats; and, Charlie Hessil, with two singles in three trips to the plate.
Lackawanna's next game is Thursday, when the Falcons travel to Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, to play the Messiah College Junior Varsity team. Thursday's game is a nine inning affair and is scheduled to start at 3:00 PM.
