Myrtle Beach, SC – The Lackawanna College baseball team were defeated in both of their Friday games. In the 3:00 PM contest they fell to Nassau Community College 6-3 and then lost to West Virginia Wesleyan's Junior Varsity 4-1 in their 6:00 PM match-up.
In the first game, Nassau took an early three run lead through the top of the second inning which the Falcons responded to with runs in the bottom of the second and third innings. Unfortunately for the Falcons Nassau scored three in the top of the fourth, establishing a 6-2 lead which Lackawanna could only cut into with a run in the bottom of the fourth.
Alex Varaska, suffered the loss, his first of the season. He had a respectable appearance, pitching five innings, giving up six runs on eight hits, while striking out three. He was relieved by PJ Mandarano who hurled two innings of scoreless and hitless ball.
The Falcons leading hitter was Ethan Bowen, who singled and doubled in three at bats. Notable was D'Quan Matthews, who had Lackawanna's other extra base hit, a triple. It was Matthews's third three base hit of the spring trip.
In game two, Lackawanna fell behind by four in the first inning, a deficit they could only dent with a run in the second.
Luis Martinez was the losing pitcher, giving up all four runs in the opening frame. However, Mandarano again appeared in relief holding the opponents to only three hits and no runs for four innings.
In his two Friday appearances, Mandarano established himself as a go to relief pitcher as he threw a total of six scoreless innings while giving up only three hits.
Sean O'Connor was the Falcons' top batter with two singles in three at bats. He also scored Lackawanna's only run.
Lackawanna finishes their spring trip Saturday morning when they play Henry Ford College in a 9:00 AM Contest
