Eleven Falcons to Play Collegiate Summer Ball

Despite the fact that its regular season doesn't start until March 3rd with a game versus the Wilkes University Junior Varsity team, the Lackawanna Falcon Baseball team can already proudly announce that eleven of its players will be participating in top summer collegiate baseball leagues across the country.

The eleven players, their position and team they will be playing with in addition to the summer league in which they are playing are listed below:

D'Quan Matthews OF/RHP – Rockford Rivets (Northwoods League)

The Northwoods League is a collegiate summer baseball league comprising teams of the top college players from North America and beyond.  The Northwoods League led all summer leagues in attendance in 2015 and has had more than 194 players chosen in the MLB First-Year Player Draft. Notable NWL alumni include Max Sherzer, Chris Sale, Curtis Granderson, Jordan Zimmerman, and Ben Zobrist.

Luis Martinez RHP – Silver-Spring Takoma Thunderbolts (Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League)

The Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League was founded in 2005 to provide a world class opportunity for college all-stars from across the United States to play wooden bat baseball in the national capital region each summer. Since the league began in 2005, 302 alumni have been drafted by or signed as a free agent with MLB teams. Those now on major league rosters include the All-Star second baseman for the Minnesota Twins, Brian Dozier; the All-Star relief pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays, Brett Cecil; the first baseman for the Miami Marlins, Justin Bour; and the closer for the Cleveland Indians, Cody Allen.

Max Frederick RHP – Lehigh Valley Catz (Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League)

The ACBL was founded in 1966 and has produced MLB players Ryan Vogelsong, Jamie Moyer, and Mike Aviles.

Zach Lopataka OF/LHP – Hornell Dodgers (New York Collegiate League)

The New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL) is a collegiate summer baseball league founded in 1978 and sanctioned by the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball, National Amateur Baseball Federation and Major League Baseball. MLB players who played in the New York Collegiate League include Raja Davis, Tim Hudson, Hunter Pence, J.D. Martinez, Jason Motte. In 2015, twelve former NYCL ball players were selected in the first year MLB Draft.

Connor Perry OF – Paul Carpenter Capital Advisors - All-American Amateur Baseball Association (AAABA)  

The All-American Amateur Baseball Association was established in 1944 and has become one of the most respected amateur baseball organizations in the nation. The national tournament, held each August, is considered to be the World Series of amateur baseball in America.  The National AAABA Tournament is sponsored by the Johnstown Old-timers Baseball Association and draws college and professional scouts from all over the nation. In the past 70 years, over 400 players who have played in the AAABA Tournament have reached the Major Leagues.

The Mid Atlantic Collegiate League (MACL) is a new league formed with the idea of providing players with a competitive summer atmosphere and will provide exposure to coaches and scouts.
