New Rochelle, NY – The Lackawanna College baseball team dropped both games of its Thursday afternoon doubleheader to Monroe College, despite two impressive pitching performances. The Falcons fell in the first game by a 1-0 score and lost the night-cap by a 2-1 margin.
Game one was decided in the eighth inning on a Monroe single, stolen base and walk-off base hit that drove in the only run of the game. Otherwise the contest was a pitcher's battle. Monroe pitching held the Falcons scoreless for eight innings on four hits while striking out seven. The Falcons four hits were singles by Robert Dodd, Arbely Soto and Ian Conwell, and a double by Maicol Parrilla.
Except for the eighth inning run, Anthony Hernandez matched the Monroe effort. Hernandez hurled seven and a third innings, giving up a sole run on four hits while striking out six. Hernandez's win/loss record is now 1-2
In the second game, all the scoring took place in the second inning as Sjaghbar Martis led off the inning with a single and scored on a Nick Hogan base hit. Monroe scored two in the bottom of the inning without putting the ball in play. Two hit by pitches, a stolen base and three passed balls gave the Mustangs their only two runs. Ironically in that same frame not even the outs were put in play as all three outs came via strikeouts.
All the Falcon hits were generated by Martis, who went two for three; and, Hogan, who had three hits in three at bats.
Francis Ortiz was the real star of the game despite suffering the loss. Ortiz pitched a seven inning complete game, relinquishing only two runs, both unearned. He yielded a solo hit and struck out seven. The loss was Ortiz's first against one win.
