SCRANTON, Pa. – The Lackawanna College eSports program announced this Monday that they have become members of the National Association of Collegiate eSports (NACE).
"This is a huge deal for our esports program in terms of growth and exposure. By joining NACE, we are getting our foot in the door of potentially the official governing body of collegiate esports" said Teddy Delaney, Lackawanna College eSports Administrator and Head Coach. "We will have more recruiting resources at our disposal as well as the opportunity to make contacts with other colleges across the collegiate esports stage. We are extremely excited to see how this partnership will help expand and strengthen our program."
NACE is a member driven organization that focuses on the positive development of esports programs at the collegiate level, and advocates for members to create varsity programs that include scholarships for its participants and a strong institutional commitment to the sport. NACE is the only association of college and university sponsored esports programs that promotes the education and development of students through intercollegiate esports.
According to their website, NACE officially formed on July 28, 2016 at the first ever Collegiate eSports Summit held in Kansas City, MO. At that time only seven colleges and universities had varsity esports programs. Since then a rapidly growing number of institutions have launched varsity programming, with a current count of 80+ institutions. As of January 2018, over 90% of all varsity esports programs in the U.S. are members of NACE with an ever increasing number of schools exploring esports.
"This partnership is one that we have had on our radar since our beginning stages of developing esports at Lackawanna College. We are excited to partner with such a prominent association in order to give our student athletes the best possible opportunity for competition and success," Joya Whittington, Lackawanna College Director of Athletics and Head Women's Basketball Coach.
The Lackawanna College eSports team will be competing in the 2018-2019 academic year and are actively recruiting athletes for the inaugural team. The Falcons will initially compete in Overwatch, League of Legends, and Rocket League. Athletic scholarships will be available for new students who meet minimum eligibility standards.
